Although director Minelli's work is generally considered Hollywood gold his experiment with an early 1950's dance oriented film won an academy award for best picture without translating well to millennium audiences today. Among the five leads Nina Foch was ill for most of the shooting, Georges Giuterry was a relative unknown in America, Leslie Caron and Oscar Levant became infamous as difficult to direct and Gene Kelly as the choreographer of a dance film was more a line boss than a performer on the set. The tap sequences are exquisite and there is a full performance of a one act ballet during the running time, all positives for dance fans. Despite Minelli's obvious talents shining through casting three leads who are not dancers in a dance film - Foch, Giuterry and Levant, gives the romantic leads, Kelly and Caron more to dance than to sing and does Caron really have a song in the film.

His neighbor friend Adam Cook (Oscar Levant) is a struggling songwriter pianist. Adam's longtime French singer associate Henri Baurel (Georges Guétary) tells him about a new young girlfriend. Wealthy older heiress Milo Roberts (Nina Foch) takes an interest in Jerry's art and Jerry himself. While trying to avoid her on a date, he starts flirting with Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron.
There are iconic songs. The music is loverly. There is Gene Kelly dancing. This is a must for any song and dance fans. As a story and a romance, it takes awhile to heat up. Leslie Caron's character doesn't speak until after over thirty minutes. They need an early scene to develop more chemistry. It's not until their riverside dance in midpoint where their romance truly break through. That is probably the only minor failing and this is simply an icon that any film fan must see if only for the big dance number.

The show, directed by British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, tells the story of an American GI falling in love in post-war Paris. The Broadway production won four Tony awards in 2015, with Wheeldon picking up the prize for best choreography. It will open at London's Dominion Theatre on 21 March 2017. Both of the Broadway leads will reprise their roles in the West End production, as part of a company of more than 50 actors, dancers and musicians. The original Broadway cast of An American in Paris The show tells the story of an American GI falling in love in post-war Paris An American in Paris New York City Ballet principal dancer Robert Fairchild will play Jerry Mulligan, the American GI striving to make it as a painter in Paris, and British Royal Ballet soloist Leanne Cope will play the beautiful young dancer Lise Dassin with whom he falls in love. The show's songs, by George and Ira Gershwin, include I Got Rhythm, 'S Wonderful, and They Can't Take That Away From Me. The stage adaptation includes a reimagined version of the famous 17-minute ballet sequence between Kelly and co-star Lesley Caron that concludes the 1951 film. Director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon was made an OBE in the 2016 New Year Honours An American in Paris had been rumoured for a London transfer after a casting call for ballet dancers appeared in February. Wheeldon's production had its world premiere in Paris at the Theatre du Chatelet in 2014 before it transferred to New York's Palace Theatre in April 2015. A major North American tour begins later this year.

Gene Kelly, who was a magnificent tap-dancer, also shows his balletic skills in "An American in Paris. One example of this is in the dance at the fountain scene, one of the most famous from the movie. And Leslie Caron, perhaps most famous for her role as Gigi, holds her own alongside Kelly with her own dancing ability. If you don't like dancing, I wouldn't recommend this movie. But if you do, as I do, I really recommend this classic musical. Watch it and judge for yourself why it's considered one of the greatest movies ever made.

She brings him to her apartment to pay for his works, and invites him to a dinner party she is throwing later that night. After singing with French children on the way home, Jerry shows up to Milo's apartment. He quickly finds out that the "party" is actually a one-on-one date, and tells Milo he has no interest in being a paid escort. When he attempts to leave after giving her money back, she insists that she is only interested in his art. They go to a crowded bar, and she offers to sponsor an art show for Jerry as a friendly gesture. Some of Milo's friends arrive, and while sitting with them, he sees Lise Bouvier ( Leslie Caron), a French girl seated at the next table. Jerry ignores Milo and her acquaintances, and instead pretends to know Lise already and dances with her. Later, Adam humorously daydreams that he is performing Gershwin's Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra for a gala audience in a concert hall. As the scene progresses, Adam is also revealed to be the conductor, other members of the orchestra, and even an enthusiastic audience member applauding himself at the end. Milo gets Jerry an art studio and tells him she has planned an exhibition of his work in three months. He initially refuses the studio because he does not have the money for it, but eventually accepts it under the condition that he pay Milo back when his art proceeds allow him. Roughly a month later and after much courting, Lise abruptly runs off when she and Jerry arrive by taxi at his apartment. When Jerry complains to Adam, he is shocked to realize that both Henri and Jerry are involved with the same woman. Henri and Jerry discuss the woman they each love, unaware she is the same woman. That night, Jerry and Lise reunite in the same place on the banks of the Seine close to Notre Dame. She informs him that she is marrying Henri the next day and going to America. Lise feels a sense of duty to Henri, to whom she feels indebted for keeping her safe during World War II. She and Jerry proclaim their love for each other. Feeling slighted, Jerry invites Milo to the art students' masked ball and kisses her. At the raucous party, with everyone in black-and-white costumes, Milo learns from Adam that Jerry is not interested in her, and Henri overhears Jerry and Lise saying goodbye to each other.
